Print Methods for Cylindrical Snack Cans
Cylindrical packaging presents print challenges that flat packaging doesn't: the curvature means that a design element at the outer edges of the print plate appears narrower on the finished tube, print registration must account for the spiral seam, and the printing process must be timed precisely with the tube winding process.
Offset Printing: The Standard for Quality
Offset printing on paper tubes uses a blanket cylinder that transfers ink from the printing plate to the curved tube surface. Registration accuracy of ±0.3mm is achievable with properly calibrated equipment. Resolution up to 175 LPI supports photographic-quality reproduction. Up to 8 colors in a single pass.
Print plate cost: $80–150 per color. Amortized over 10,000+ units, this adds $0.008–0.015 per unit per color — negligible at commercial volumes. Offset is the recommended method for any tube order above 5,000 units where print quality is a priority.
Flexo Printing: Speed at Lower Resolution
Flexographic printing uses flexible photopolymer plates and is faster than offset for simple designs (1–3 colors, solid areas rather than gradients). Resolution is lower (~100 LPI) because the flexible plates deform slightly under pressure. Flexo is economical for large runs (>50,000 units) of simple designs — think solid-color tubes with a single logo — but can't match offset's detail for complex artwork.
Shrink Sleeves: Full Coverage, Maximum Flexibility
Shrink sleeves are printed on flat film, then heat-shrunk onto the tube after production. This allows 360° printing coverage (the seam is invisible), supports photographic reproduction, and enables variable packaging (different flavors/designs on the same tube stock). The trade-offs: (1) the sleeve is typically PET or PVC, adding a non-recyclable layer, (2) cost is higher than direct print ($0.04–0.08/unit additional), (3) sleeve application is a separate production step, adding lead time.
Shrink sleeves are most appropriate for limited-edition or seasonal packaging where changing tube stock would be impractical, or for brands requiring 360° coverage with no visible seam.
Pre-Press Checklist
- Submit artwork in CMYK color space (not RGB — the conversion results are unpredictable)
- Include a bleed of at least 3mm beyond the print area to account for registration drift
- Keep text at least 6pt for legibility on curved surfaces
- Specify Pantone colors if exact brand-color matching is required
- Request a hard-copy color proof before production approval
