For most consumer packaged goods, packaging contributes 5–15% of the total product carbon footprint. That sounds small, but it's often the most immediately controllable portion. A brand can't easily reduce the carbon footprint of its product formulation, but it can switch packaging materials with a single sourcing decision.

Practical Reduction Strategies

  1. Reduce wall thickness: Going from 5-ply to 3-ply reduces material weight by ~35% and associated carbon emissions proportionally.
  2. Source closer: Shipping from China to the US adds approximately 0.015 kg CO₂e per tube (sea freight). Producing closer to the end market would reduce this, but most tube manufacturing remains concentrated in China.
  3. Increase recycled content: Post-consumer recycled (PCR) paperboard has approximately 40% lower carbon intensity than virgin paperboard because the pulping energy has already been invested. However, PCR paperboard is typically lower brightness and may not suit all print requirements.
