I've been making shuttlecocks in Wuhu since 1999. In that time, I've shipped to over 50 countries, and one conversation I have at least three times a week goes like this:
"I want tournament-grade shuttlecocks."
Then I ask: "What's your target market and selling price?"
And about half the time, the answer tells me they don't actually need tournament grade. They need something that flies straight for 12-15 rallies at a price their customers will pay without blinking. That's match grade. Or sometimes club grade.
The labels "tournament," "match," "club," and "training" get thrown around by every factory, but there's zero industry standard for what they mean. One factory's "tournament" is another factory's "match." Your job as a brand owner is to understand what you're actually paying for, regardless of the label.
The Four Tiers, As They Actually Work
Here's how I think about the tiers on our own production floor. Not from a marketing brochure. From QC reports.
Tournament Grade (Also Called "AA" or "AAA")
Feathers: Full-round goose feathers only. Both wings must be from the same batch โ no mixing left-wing and right-wing within the same tube. Each feather is hand-selected for curvature consistency, minimum 58mm in length.
Cork: 100% natural Portuguese cork, triple-layer compression. Rebound tested to within 2% of reference.
Flight test: Landing zone within ยฑ22cm at standard 20ยฐC / 50% humidity. We test 10% of every production batch โ if more than 1% fall outside, the entire batch is downgraded.
Durability: Under 1% feather breakage in 15-minute simulated match play.
Price range from our factory: $25โ45 per dozen (ex-factory), depending on order volume and tube printing complexity.
Who actually needs this: National-level tournament suppliers, premium club brands in Europe/Japan/Korea, brands positioning above $30/dozen retail. If your customers can tell the difference between a 0.1g weight variance, they're your market.
Match Grade (A+)
This is where 80% of the successful OEM shuttlecock brands I work with actually land.
Feathers: Selected goose feathers, full-round, minor curvature variance allowed. Left and right wings may be mixed within the tube (most players can't tell the difference during a game).
Cork: Natural cork core with composite reinforcement layer. Still rebounds cleanly, but not to the 2% tolerance of tournament grade.
Flight test: ยฑ30cm landing zone. Still flies true enough for competitive club play.
Durability: 2โ4% feather breakage in 15-minute play. Acceptable for matches but you'll go through more tubes per session than tournament grade.
Price range from our factory: $12โ20 per dozen.
Who this is for: Club-level players, university teams, mid-tier retail brands, Amazon private labels. This is the "good enough to be someone's regular shuttlecock" tier.
Club Grade (B+)
Feathers: Goose or duck mix, slightly shorter feathers (52โ55mm), more variance in curvature.
Cork: Composite cork โ natural/recycled blend. Slightly harder impact feel, slightly faster degradation over repeated use.
Flight test: ยฑ45cm landing zone. Noticeable to competitive players but perfectly fine for recreational games and training sessions.
Durability: 5โ8% breakage rate.
Price range from our factory: $6โ10 per dozen.
Who this is for: School PE programs, recreational clubs, multi-pack value brands, markets where price sensitivity is high (Southeast Asia, South America, Africa).
Training Grade (C)
Feathers: Duck feathers, mixed sizes, cosmetic flaws acceptable. The shuttlecock flies โ that's about the performance guarantee.
Cork: Recycled composite.
Price: $2โ5 per dozen.
Who this is for: Training academies buying in bulk, beginner programs, brands that need a "loss leader" product to fill a catalog.
The Mistake I See Most New Brands Make
They order tournament grade, price it at $35/dozen, and launch in a market where the average club player spends $15โ18. Then they wonder why nobody buys.
Or the opposite: they order training grade, label it "premium," and wonder why the Amazon reviews are brutal after three months.
The grade needs to match not just your ambition, but the actual wallet of the person standing at a pro shop counter holding your tube.
How to Choose: Three Questions
Before you tell any factory what grade you want, answer these:
- Where are you selling? Europe and Japan demand tournament or match grade. Southeast Asia buys more club and training. The US is split โ Amazon shoppers skew price-sensitive, specialty tennis/badminton shops skew premium.
- What's your retail price target? Take the retail price, divide by 3โ4. That's roughly what you should pay the factory. If you want to sell at $18, your factory cost needs to be $4.50โ6.00/dozen. That means club grade.
- Who is your actual end-user? A 55-year-old playing doubles twice a week at a community center is a different buyer than a 22-year-old competing in regional tournaments. Build for the customer who actually buys, not the one you wish bought.
If you're unsure, start with match grade. It gives you enough quality to build a brand reputation without the price point that scares away first-time buyers. You can always add a tournament-grade SKU after you have traction.
