Biodegradable Packaging Materials What You Need To Know — Kuzo Packing

Biodegradable ≠ Compostable: The Distinction That Matters

Biodegradable means the material breaks down naturally over time — but that could be 6 months or 60 years depending on conditions. Compostable means it breaks down within a specific timeframe (typically 90–180 days) under composting conditions and leaves no toxic residue. For packaging claims, the difference matters legally in the EU and increasingly in the US.

Paper tubes without plastic liners or coatings are biodegradable in the general sense and compostable in industrial facilities. A Kraft paper tube with water-based adhesive and soy ink will fully decompose in an industrial composting environment within 120–180 days. Adding a PE liner or plastic laminate changes this — the paper body is still biodegradable but the liner requires separation or specialized processing.

Certifications to Look For

EN 13432 (EU) and ASTM D6400 (US) are the two major industrial compostability standards. A tube meeting these standards can display the "compostable" logo and can enter industrial composting streams. Home composting certification (TÜV Austria's OK Compost HOME) is rarer and more stringent — very few paper tube manufacturers have achieved it because the decomposition rate requirements are more demanding at lower home-compost temperatures (25–35°C vs 55–60°C industrial).

What Kuzo Packing Offers

Our standard Kraft paper tubes with water-based adhesive are biodegradable and industrially compostable. For brands requiring certified compostable packaging, we can produce tubes with EN 13432-certified materials and provide documentation. The material premium is approximately 15–20% over standard Kraft.
