Custom Packaging Trends For Modern Brands

Custom Packaging Trends For Modern Brands — Kuzo Packing

Trend 1: Paper Replacing Plastic at Scale

This isn't a "trend" in the fashionable sense. It's a regulatory reality. The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), adopted in 2024 and phasing in through 2030, mandates that all packaging be recyclable at scale. For cylindrical containers — cosmetics, food, consumer goods — that translates directly to paper tubes replacing plastic or mixed-material alternatives.

The shift is already visible in production volumes. In our facility, paper tube orders from European brands increased approximately 40% year-over-year between 2023 and 2025. The key change: brands that used to request plastic caps on paper tubes are now asking for paper caps, full-paper constructions, and soy-based ink printing.

The practical implication for buyers: if your packaging spec still includes a plastic cap or a plastic inner liner with no recyclability documentation, you may face friction from EU distributors within 12–18 months. Specifying FSC-certified paperboard and water-based adhesives now costs marginally more but avoids compliance redesign costs later.

Trend 2: The Unboxing Experience Matters to B2B Buyers Too

The unboxing conversation has been consumer-focused, but it's increasingly relevant to B2B: a distributor receiving your product for the first time judges it before opening the case. If the tube feels flimsy, if the print registration is off by 0.5mm, if the cap doesn't close with a satisfying click — that impression attaches to your brand, not the packaging supplier.

In our QC lab, we measure cap insertion and extraction force on every production batch. Acceptable range: 15–25N insertion, 8–18N extraction. Values outside this range are rejected before shipping. The specification exists because we've had brands report that retail staff judged product quality based entirely on whether the cap felt "premium" when opened.

Trend 3: Transparency Labels and QR Integration

More brands are printing QR codes and traceability data directly onto tube packaging. Offset printing supports variable data (batch numbers, production dates) and QR codes with no additional plate charge. Screen printing does not support variable data without additional equipment.

If your brand plans to add QR codes or lot number printing in the next 18 months, specify offset printing in your tube order now. Retrofitting from screen print to offset isn't just a plate change — it requires different setup on the tube winding line.

Trend 4: Smaller Diameters, Premium Materials

The "mini" format — tubes under 50mm diameter — is growing across cosmetics, supplements, and specialty foods. Smaller tubes use less material, cost less to ship (dimensional weight optimization), and benefit from a higher perceived-value-to-size ratio. A well-printed 35mm cosmetic tube with gold hot stamping can retail for $20+ while the packaging cost is under $0.40.

Common mini-tube diameters: 28mm, 30mm, 35mm, 40mm. Wall construction is typically 2–3 plies rather than the standard 3–5 plies used for larger-diameter food tubes.

Trend 5: FSC Certification as Table Stakes

In 2022, FSC certification was a differentiator. In 2025, it's a prerequisite for doing business with major European and North American retailers. Walmart, Target, Amazon, and most EU chains now have packaging sustainability commitments that require FSC or equivalent chain-of-custody certification.

Our factory carries FSC Chain of Custody certification (C128717). The per-unit cost impact is roughly 8–12% on raw material. If your brand operates in a market where this certification is not yet required, ordering FSC-certified material now positions you ahead of the regulatory curve.
