Approximately 350 million shuttlecocks are produced globally each year. The vast majority are sold in plastic tubes. Each tube weighs about 12–18 grams. At 350 million tubes, that's 4,200–6,300 metric tons of plastic annually — most of which ends up in landfills or oceans. The badminton industry has been slow to address packaging sustainability because the performance requirement (protecting delicate feather shuttlecocks from moisture and impact) makes material substitution challenging.
A paper tube addresses the material problem without sacrificing protection. With the correct inner diameter, wall thickness, and cap design, a 42mm paper tube provides equivalent crush resistance and moisture protection to a plastic tube, while adding recyclability and biodegradability.
Paper Tube Specs for Shuttlecock Protection
The critical specifications for shuttlecock tube performance are unchanged whether you use paper or plastic: inner diameter (42mm standard), tube length (340–355mm depending on shuttlecock count), crush resistance (>80 kg vertical compression for retail shelf stacking), and moisture barrier (ambient RH 70% or below for standard, below 85% for tropical markets with PE outer coating).
Paper tubes achieve these specs with: 4–5 plies of spiral-wound paperboard (total wall thickness 2.0–2.5mm), a PE or aqueous outer coating for moisture resistance, and custom-fit PE or paper caps with a secure friction or screw fit.
Market Readiness: Where Your Customers Are
European badminton retailers have begun requesting sustainable packaging documentation from suppliers. Japanese and Korean markets, where badminton has strong consumer participation, are also seeing increased eco-labeling expectations. Southeast Asian markets are earlier in the adoption curve but moving quickly — Indonesia and Malaysia, two of the world's largest badminton markets, are implementing extended producer responsibility regulations.
