The 2-Second Rule of Retail
Eye-tracking studies in retail environments show that consumers spend an average of 2–3 seconds scanning a product category before their eyes fixate on a specific item. In those 2 seconds, your packaging has to communicate: category (what is this?), brand (who made it?), flavor/variant (which one?), and value signal (premium? value? natural?). A cylindrical can has less front-facing surface than a rectangular box, so every design element must earn its space.
Design Hierarchy for Cylindrical Cans
The most effective chip can designs follow a clear visual hierarchy: (1) appetite appeal — a photograph or illustration of the food product, occupying 40–50% of the visible surface; (2) brand mark — logo and brand name, prominent but not dominant, occupying 15–20%; (3) flavor/benefit callout — concise text (3–5 words maximum), occupying 10–15%; (4) regulatory and nutritional information — placed on the rear or base where it doesn't compete with purchase-decision elements.
Designs that violate this hierarchy — e.g., a large brand logo with a tiny food image — underperform in consumer preference testing by an average of 22% in A/B tests. Consumers buy the food, not the logo. Show the food prominently.
Color Psychology by Category
In blind category testing, certain color associations are consistent across markets: green and brown signal "natural, healthy, organic" — effective for vegetable chips, kale crisps, and health-positioned snacks; red and orange signal "bold, spicy, intense" — effective for flavored chips, protein crisps; black and gold signal "premium, gourmet" — effective for premium-positioned or gift-format snacks; blue and white signal "clean, fresh" — effective for plain or lightly salted snacks.
These associations are guidelines, not rules. The most important factor is category differentiation: if every competitor uses green, a red tube will stand out dramatically. Sometimes the best design decision is the opposite of the category norm.
