The number — usually 76, 77, or 78 — is a speed grade. The higher the number, the faster and heavier the shuttlecock flies. 77 is the standard speed for most indoor halls in moderate climates. From there, you adjust up or down based on the conditions where your customer actually plays.
Most buyers get this backwards in one of two ways: they either ignore the number entirely, or they assume "bigger number = better." Neither is right. The number has to match the environment, not your ego.
How Temperature, Humidity, and Altitude Change the Speed
The rule, stated simply:
- Hot air is thinner (less dense), so the shuttle meets less resistance and flies faster and farther. In hot weather you want a slower, lighter shuttle — a lower number.
- Cold air is denser, so the shuttle meets more resistance and flies slower. In cold weather you want a faster, heavier shuttle — a higher number.
- High altitude means thin air year-round. If your market is a high-altitude city, you generally need a faster shuttle (higher number) than sea level.
So a "correct" order depends entirely on where your customer plays — there's no single universal answer.
A Speed Reference for Common Export Markets
This is the table I keep pinned next to my desk. It's a starting point, not a law — local hall conditions always override it — but it'll get you closer than guessing:

The Test You Should Do Before Committing to a Full Order
Before you lock in a speed for a new market, there's a simple field test that's been used for decades: stand at the back baseline and hit the shuttle with a full underhand stroke toward the opposite baseline. The shuttle should land in the zone between the far baseline and roughly half a metre in front of it. If it lands short, the ball is too slow for those conditions — go up a number. If it flies past the far baseline, it's too fast — go down a number.

One of the most common questions I get is some version of "is 78 better quality than 76?" No. Speed and grade are completely separate dials:
- Speed (76/77/78) controls how fast and far the shuttle flies in a given environment.
- Grade (tournament / club / training) controls feather quality, consistency, and durability.
A 78 training ball is still a training ball — it just flies faster. A 76 tournament ball is still a tournament ball — it just flies slower. When you're writing your OEM spec sheet, you specify both, and they need to match your customer's playing level and their climate.
